Truth be told, websites creating is often treated as one-time experience. People turn to developers to have the job done, get a nice website “built,” and then move on. But that’s not how it works. A CMS is not a book. You write a book, you publish it, and it’s done. It can be endured for centuries. CMS, contrastingly, is never done. It’s not enough to just get a website installed – you also need to make sure to keep it up-to-date.
Because Joomla 1.5 has officially declared its ‘end of life’ a few years ago, a question of many users’ minds is whether to upgrade their current version of the platform to the newer one or not. Generally, it is strongly recommended to leave the old 1.5 version behind because Joomla community stopped working on it and official security releases didn’t come out for it any more. This is exactly the reason why it’s more beneficial to upgrade. This tutorial aims to walk you through the process of upgrading from Joomla 1.5 to 1.7 for you to get ready to upgrade your Joomla website without getting your feet wet with mountains of scripts and codes. Let’s get started:
Before you initiate your upgrading process, make sure you’ve used a tool like Akeeba Backup to make a copy of your site. Contrastingly, any external storage device can come in handy for this reason.
If you want to have your Joomla website upgraded with your minimal involvement in the process – go to CMS2CMS official website and register your account there. All you need is to provide your username, email and password. Alternatively, you may login through Social Media (Facebook or Google+).
Connect your websites
To proceed this aim download and install the bridge file on your PC. Once done, connect your Joomla websites via FTP client software. Within FTP dashboard copy the “cms2cms” folder and paste it into the root directories of your Joomla websites (current and new versions).
Now it’s time to choose migration options that you expect to be imported to Joomla 1.7. Just check the matching boxes to activate them.
When, specified, test Demo migration (which is totally free) to watch the CMS2CMS tool in action and, therefore, decide whether to continue with the tool or not.
In case your Demo output has completely satisfied your expectations – initiate Full Migration. In some moments you’ll have your brand-new Joomla 1.7 website ready to go.
Once you have your upgraded Joomla 1.7 website live – test your new website to see if everything is working correctly. Don’t forget to take care of your new website SEO and design features.

This is misleading, completely erroneous advice. Joomla 1.7 is an obsolete, unsupported version of Joomla, long since declared end of life for support and security releases. The fact that you have published such an upgrade article in late 2014 demonstrates that your company has NO current knowledge or expertise in Joomla CMS, period.
Appropriate advice is to migrate your older Joomla site to the latest version of Joomla 3, which has a support and security release commitment from Joomla.org through the end of 2018. To tell anyone to consider moving their website to anything less than Joomla 3.x as of October 2014 is laughable at best, and downright dangerous at worst.
